Safe food handling and high packaging procedures are a must when it comes to meat and poultry products. All sterile packaging for meat and meat products must be deemed safe and must comply with the standards set down by the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA).

The FDA has many requirements for how food must be packaged in order for it to be safe to be put out on grocery store shelves and sold to the public. All packaging material that comes into a meat plant must be covered by a statement of assurance or a guaranty from the supplier in question. The statement must declare that the material do indeed comply with the standards of the FFDCA. Other items that must be a part of the statement include the name of the brand, the name of the supplier, and the conditions for the use of the packaging material, such as the temperature, etc.

There are a number of different consumers packaging material that are used in homes every day. Plastic wraps and storage bags are broken down into three separate categories. There are polyethylene (PE), polyvinylchloride (PVC) and polyvinylidene chloride PVCD). The resins in the plastic are all made of derivatives of petroleum. Other components that may be added include colorants, anti-fog agents and plasticizers.

Most produce bags found in a grocery store are created from polyethylene or another kind of plastic film. These bags are meant to be transport fruits and vegetables from the store to the home and should never be used for cooking in any instance as the plastic can burn or melt.

Oven cooking bags meant to cook turkeys in often have closure ties and both are constructed from heat-resistant nylon. These kinds of bags provide a sterile environment for meat and can be used in both conventional ovens as well as microwave ovens. When using a cooking bag in a conventional oven, make sure the temperature is no higher than 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

It is possible for very small traces of chemicals to get into food by way of the packaging material and that is why sterile packaging is so important. This explains why the FDA has very strict regulations when it comes to the packaging of food. Consumers need to take the time to learn about the most appropriate ways to package food in their homes to prevent the growth of air borne bacteria from migrating into their food.
